A group of unemployed people demanding work from the mines, barricaded the R30 road today – Wednesday (15/03) – at Allanridge with burning tyres and large rocks.

The Allanridge police were informed about the group of protesters barricading the road. The protest action started at 01:45, and the group proceeded to stop all traffic moving on the R30. Motorists were instructed to take alternative routes.

“Members of the Welkom Public Order Policing (POP) were summoned to the scene and the situation was brought under control. All the concerned groups were directed to negotiate with the mine management,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa police.

Thakeng says the situation is being monitored. “Traffic has been able to flow very smoothly under the watchful eye of POP and Allanridge police members.”

A case of public violence has been registered for further investigation.
