An exciting venture, New Bronville, aims to tackle the scourge of drugs.
The youth empowerment non-governmental organisation held a drug rehabilitation workshop on 12 February in Bronville.
It was presented by guest speaker Dr Nazeem Abrahams, founder and director of the Lighthouse on the Horizon rehabilitation centre in Johannesburg.
“This workshop was the first of its kind in Bronville, and was well attended by various private and public stakeholders concerned with arresting the destructive cycle of drug abuse in this community,” says Clayton Wadrif, general secretary of New Bronville.
These stakeholders included the representatives of the SAPS, various Community Policing Forums (CPF), the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca), Engo, Childline South Africa, Helping Hands, the Department of Social Development, the National Development Agency (NDA) and Harmony, as well as the youth development officer of the Office of the Mayor of the Matjhabeng Municipality.
“The aim of this workshop was to establish a much-needed intervention centre in Bronville that can accommodate substance abusers and affected families who need help and counselling to overcome the effects of addiction,” says Wadrif.
New Bronville’s other projects include the MTV Peer Educator Programme, sports development initiatives, entrepreneurship assistant initiatives, a weekly food kitchen, as well as other partnering initiatives with various stakeholders in the greater Bronville community.
