Both the Free State MEC for Social Development and the deputy minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment paid the beleaguered Matjhabeng Municipality a visit on Tuesday (08/02).
MEC Mamiki Qabathe, accompanied by the South African Red Cross Society, visited families in Nyakallong and Bronville that were affected by the recent floods.
This was part of the provincial interventions aimed at providing relief to affected families following the floods in December and January.
Qabathe was joined by Makhotso Sotyu (deputy minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment), Veronica Ntakumbana (executive mayor of the Lejweleputswa District Municipality) and Thanduxolo Khalipha (mayor of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality).
Red Cross provided vegetables and 104 food parcels to households in Nyakallong, Allanridge, and vegetables and 92 food parcels to families in Bronville.
- Sotyu also visited Matjhabeng to inspect the landfill site in Odendaalsrus. She has identified and implemented a long-term plan to get the landfill sites back into working order with proper procedures and systems in place. Trained and qualified staff will be appointed. This is to alleviate the problems being experienced at the landfill sites in the municipality.
