A 22-year-old woman and her 3-month-old baby have been brutally murdered in Meloding.

The two bodies were discovered by a neighbour on 16 April in Katanga, Meloding. Their throats had been slit.

They were identified by a next of kin as Zimbabwean national Ratiso Dhelngwayo and her child, Progress Mhofu. Both were certified dead on the scene.

One suspect has been identified in the case.

A charge of statutory rape was added to the murder charges after a family friend, who lives in Meloding, alleged that the deceased had visited her on 6 March and told her that the suspect had been raping her 12-year-old daughter.

The neighbour said that the suspect had been locking the mother and her children in his house so that they could not report the rape.

The SAPS are investigating a double murder and a case of statutory rape.

The SAPS would like to question a Mozambican national known as Jesus Mhofu in connection with the case.

Should anyone have information that could assist the SAPS with their investigation, they are requested to contact Det. Sgt. Thato Mokoena of the Welkom Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit on 067-170-6540 or Crime Stop on 08600-10111, or send an anonymous tip-off on the My SAPS app.
