The Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) in Matjhabeng has opposed the proposed 3% salary increase for councillors.
“If councillors are serving on this council for the money, then they are here for the wrong reasons”, said Manie Pretorius, FF Plus councillor.
He says in view of the current economic situation councillors cannot place more pressure on residents to fund an increase.
“This council approved an unfunded budget, the question is how the proposed salary increase will be funded?” he says.
Susan Taljaard, FF Plus proportional councillor, says that if council approves the increase it will send a negative message to those trying to assist Matjhabeng.
The proposed increase was accepted in principal by the ANC councillors on Tuesday (28/06), but still needs to be ratified.
