The Free State Provincial Government (FSPG) on Tuesday, 5 December, launched the Cleanest and Greenest Municipality competition at the Toronto Centre in Welkom.

In addition to the standard work done by provincial municipalities to clean their respective environments, government instituted the Letsema cleaning campaign to galvanise communities to work together with government in ensuring that their neighbourhoods are clean, green, and habitable.

It is against this backdrop that the Cleanest and Greenest Municipality competition was launched; to incentivize municipalities that are doing their best to keep the province clean.

The FSPG has to this end, worked with the national Departments of Cooperative Governance (DCOG) and Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), to solicit support for municipalities to meaningfully participate in this competition.

The launch of this milestone competition was attended by various ministers, deputy ministers, the premier, members of the executive council, the various municipalities, stakeholders, and social sector formations critical to this process.
