In the spirit of the brave and resilient women of today, and the heroines who came before them, the Iqhawe Woman’s Club is hosting their first annual Woman’s Day gala on Saturday (27/08).
The event, hosted by Yvonne Backen in partnership with Shaun Makgetla and Faizel Oliphant, aims at honouring women, and to give them the opportunity to share their personal stories to enable and empower their neighbours and generations to come.
According to Backen, the vision of Iqhawe (which means “warrior”) is to create a platform where women of all ages can be safe and free to ask for help and share their wealth of knowledge and information.
“Iqhawe is built on the African philosophy of Ubuntu, which is ‘I am because we are’ and the purpose of the event is ‘women uplifting women’.
“We want women to know that whatever they are going through; there are mothers, sisters, leaders who can motivate and support, and who can help to understand they are not alone.
“It’s been almost three years since we had social gatherings due to the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions. It is a breath of fresh air to be able to do this on such a great scale for our women,” Backen said.
The programme will feature Lerato Pretorius as guest speaker. Pretorius is the CEO of Polyzomba Rail Contractors, a company that specialises in rail construction and maintenance in South Africa.
Another guest speaker will be S’bongile Mntambo, one of the South African Idols’ finalists in 2020.
Backen said the event will include gifts for the guests, good food and a music performance by Mntambo.
The event will take place at the Word of Grace Church in Bronville at 15:00. Limited tickets are still available.
