The upgraded sports and recreational facilities at Goldfields College, Welkom Campus, have been officially handed over.

The handover ceremony was hosted by Raising Giants Organisation (RGO), a non-profit body with a bold vision to raise successful and talented leaders in communities on Saturday (25/03).

“Although located at Goldfields College, the sports and recreational facilities will benefit the whole community,” says the founder of RGO, Kgomotso Khosa.

This project forms part of RGO initiatives that are geared towards community development and is aimed at bringing sports to the communities by building and improving sporting networks and partnerships with sports associations, government, and the business communities.

“We have embarked on a sports transformation journey not to only support the development of sports in the Free State but also address societal issues such as coaching skills, mentoring, and training to ensure players, coaches, and the community is equipped with information and resources,” he says.

The project kicked off with coaching workshops in partnership with Transition Football Club and football legend, Edward Magents Motale in October 2022. The workshops benefitted and upskilled over 180 coaches.

The second phase was the upgrade of the netball courts and new multi-purpose courts.

Three Bafana Bafana legends, Doctor Khumalo, Neil Tovey and Edward Magents Motale graced the occasion to handover soccer kits and equipment to 30 local teams.

Ndivhuho Mafela, Head of Stakeholder Relations, Marketing and Communications at National Lotteries Commission, said that sports and recreation is an integral part of nation-building, creating social cohesion, and the holistic wellness of communities.

“The NLC directs a significant portion of the budget in the sport and recreation sector to organisations that develop sports and recreational facilities in rural areas, with a particular aim to increase accessibility to facilities. He said that beneficiaries in this sector also form part of the sport development, creating a pipeline of athletes that eventually uplift the profile of their various sporting codes and represent the country on the world stage.”

Patrick Pinkoane, Deputy Principal: Corporate at Goldfields College said that the college is very excited and grateful for RGO’s contribution.

“This would not have been possible through our own efforts because we did not have the resources to upgrade these facilities. We will ensure that it is preserved and used for its intended purpose.”
