Illicit mining kingpins remain prime targets in Operation Vala Umgodi

In the ongoing battle against illegal mining, Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane continues to focus on the major players enabling these illicit activities.

Alongside the Provincial Head of Crime Intelligence and private security management, Motswenyane recently revisited the impact of illegal mining in the Free State and the crucial role played by the kingpins at the helm of gold syndicates.

“Major breakthroughs will continue to be achieved through this collaborative approach,” asserts Captain Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the SAPS in the Lejweleputsa district.

Since Operation Vala Umgodi’s launch, efforts have expanded beyond illegal mining to include opportunistic crimes such as human trafficking and kidnapping. The initiative has led to the arrest of over 328 illegal miners, 97 mine employees, and 114 mine security personnel.

Noteworthy seizures during these operations include 12 million grams of amalgam (unwashed gold), often found concealed on individuals, hidden in their clothing or body cavities.

Lt. Gen. Baile Motswenyane has praised residents across the province’s mining towns for their cooperation with the Vala Umgodi teams. “She has urged them to remain vigilant and report illegal mining activities via the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111,” Thakeng adds.

Motswenyane commended the Vala Umgodi team for their exceptional work in combating illicit mining in the Free State, highlighting their significant contributions to the ongoing efforts against illegal activities.
