Action is to be taken with the ongoing housing crisis in the Free State, where government mismanagement continues to leave communities in dire conditions.
Projects under scrutiny
The G-Hostel project and the Rheeder Park Housing project in Matjhabeng are two of nine housing projects in the Free State that are undergoing scrutiny.
This came to light from a report by David Mc Kay, DA spokesperson for Human Settlements in the Free State Legislature, at the beginning of April.
Mc Kay says they will intensify pressure on all relevant authorities to address these issues with the urgency they deserve.
“Despite promises of improved housing and infrastructure, countless projects remain incomplete, plagued by funding shortfalls, vandalism, and poor planning.
“Residents cannot continue to suffer the consequences of inefficiency and neglect while the government fails to deliver on its commitments,” he says.

The visits exposed recurring issues such as mismanagement, vandalism, funding shortages, inadequate interdepartmental coordination, and poor planning.
The latter came into play, particularly, concerning water supply and sanitation, including wastewater treatment works.
In Welkom, the Rheeder Park Housing Project has been marred by severe management failures, particularly in sanitation, posing health risks to residents, and Thabong’s G-Hostel Housing Unit Project has suffered severe delays.
Furthermore, contractor terminations and ongoing performance failures have plagued this project, underscoring the need for stricter oversight and improved contractor selection processes. Mc Kay says communities cannot continue to suffer due to government incompetence and inefficiency.
