The Virginia Sports Academy represented the Free state in two different national tournaments.

The first tournament was the Engen Champ of Champs, which was held in Johannesburg at the Marks Park Sports Club.

The team played three games in the group stage and went to the semifinals, facing off against the Stellenbosch team and losing 0 – 1.

The team then played for third place against Chippa United and won by 3 – 1, attaining a bronze medal in the process.

Virginia won the tournament’s fair play award and their striker, Karabo Molumi, went from winning the golden boot award to becoming recognised as the tournament’s top goal scorer.

After the Engen tournament, the team travelled to Magaliesburg for the Kay Motsepe Schools National Tournament and performed well. They reached the semifinals but lost during penalties against Benny’s Academy from Limpopo.

Virginia played for third place and won 2 – 1 against the St Mark’s International School from Mpumalanga, winning bronze and a cheque of R600 000.

“It was the first time in history that this Virginia school went to the nationals of schools tournaments and reached the third position,” said assistant coach, Mohau Motsapi.
