Mandela Day is an annual global celebration that takes place on 18 July to honour the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela.
This day is a call to action for individuals, communities, and organisations to take some time out their schedule and reflect on Mandela’s values and principles. In doing so, they stand to make a positive impact in their own communities.
On Friday, 19 July, the Vista newspaper team visited the House of Hope child protection organisation in Welkom, to treat its personnel to some boerewors rolls and drinks.
“House of Hope delivers a very needed and unique service in taking care of the children. That is why we treated the hardworking personnel with something to eat and drink, to show our appreciation for their kind and hard work,” says Elrina de Beer of Vista.
House of Hope is faced with several challenges and relies on the community to assist them.
Currently, they have a shortage of instant porridge for babies, bum cream, toilet paper, baby powder, wet wipes, nappies (from small to larger sizes), and baby bottles.
At the organisation’s additional safe haven, House of Peace, they need roll-on deodorant for boys and girls, body cream, body wash, and non-perishable foods. For the staff, coffee, sugar, tea, milk and toilet paper is needed.
Vista would like to thank Sylvania SPAR Welkom for their contribution to make this event possible.
“Electricity and fuel vouchers are also needed and cash donations and food are always appreciated,” says Jackie Botes of House of Hope.
