Golden globes brighten the Goldfields

These beautiful bright yellow globes are scattered throughout the Goldfields. On rainy days they droop their glorious crowns but at the first sign of sunlight they start to raise their heads towards the heavens.


Standing tall to find the sunlight

Almost 80% of South Africa’s sunflower production is concentrated in the North West and Free State provinces. Farmers plant seeds between November and January, while harvesting happens between late April and mid-May. These beautiful bright yellow globes are scattered throughout the Goldfields. On rainy days they droop their glorious crowns but at the first sign of sunlight they start to raise their heads towards the heavens. The Goldfields is experienced unseasonally good rains since 1 April. More than 180mm has been experienced in the region until 22 April and more heavy rains are expected. Wednesday evening another 28mm drenched the soil in Welkom, bringing the rainfall figure to well over 200mm for April.
