A warm and loving heart Z this is what Sr. Mpho Mahamo of the Goldfields Hospice, Thabong, is known for, in addition to her goodwill and largesse.

She is a professional nurse and has been serving the community in one capacity or another for the past 41 years.

But Mahamo is especially known for the palliative care she offers her patients through the Goldfields Hospice Association.

She trained as a general nurse and midwife at the Boitumelo Hospital, Kroonstad, and also obtained a diploma in Psychiatric Nursing and in Community Health at the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein.

Mahamo is a woman who many say radiates love and compassion, and generously gives of herself to anyone in need.

She portrays a genuine passion for the community and is often called upon to speak about health issues, especially HIV/Aids.

Mahamo was invited by members of the Seniors in Action Club on 12 May to celebrate Mother’s Day with them, as a guest speaker at their Mother’s Day celebrations that were held at the Thabong Community Hall (Phillip Smith Hall).

She shared a speech about the beauty of a mother and, in conclusion, she told them that nothing can ever beat a mother.

Among her qualifications, Mahamo has a degree in Nursing Administration and Education.

She worked at the Thabong Clinic from 1983 until 1995, and from 1995 to 2005 she was the operational manager at the same clinic.

Between 2005 and 2019 she was the local area manager at the Matjhabeng East and West clinics in the Nala Local Municipality area.

Mahamo is now managing the Hospice Center in Thabong.

They provide comprehensive care of terminally ill patients in the community. They also extend their care to caring for patients in their homes.

“We at the hospice offer dying patients physical and emotional care, and we give the family emotional support during the critical time when taking care of their loved ones. Most of the patients are cancer victims.”

Mahamo says the hospice also offers services to HIV positive patients to live a normal life, and to regard HIV as any chronic condition like diabetes, asthma or hypertension, without any stigmatisation.
