Ra gardens is a vegetable garden business that produces food for the body and soul, it a business idea that was started by local Nyakallong boys who saw an opportunity in growing fruits and vegetables, and selling it.
Jabulani Skhosana and his team realised that many people had good land in their yards, but they do not grow anything so they started offering them an opportunity to assist each other.
The business was started in 2022, when Jabulani and his team decided to partner with the community.
It was a way to introduce farming in the communities and to teach people to grow their own food.
Initially Jabulani saw how badly unemployment affected the community so him and his team started asking for space from his community to plant fruits and vegetable to sell them and pay for space and water.
This will also assist the community with money as they pay.
He also noticed how old people are always advised to eat healthy and the healthy food requireds.
Ra garden founders look after the plants themselves and they sometimes take shifts in looking after the vegetables especially those that are sensitive like spinach.
“It is important to monitor the plants, but spinach is sensitive so we monitor and water it everyday, because it is too hot and it will die or vegetable bugs will eat it,” said Jabulani.
He also added that they plant their vegetables according to the seasons, but for now they have bi-seasonal vegetables like Spinach, Basil and Coriander.
They are still learning the fruit planting process as they did with vegetables.
Jabulani stated that they are in need of a bigger space to plant, they cannot plant carrots, watermelons and potatoes as they need bigger planting space and more tools.
Their wish is to grow the business, learn to grow other plants that will also produce things like cotton.
