Consumers are in for another blow when significant fuel price increases take effect at midnight tonight, hitting diesel users particularly hard with hikes of up to 84 cents per litre.

June experienced extreme volatility in global oil prices, primarily attributed to military actions by Israel and the United States against Iran. Despite the resulting market turbulence, the South African rand displayed surprising resilience.

Wide fluctuations in international oil prices caused local fuel price recoveries to swing from a small over-recovery to a sizeable under-recovery, ultimately leading to increases at the pumps for most fuel types.

Official July fuel adjustments:

Fuel TypePrice Change
Petrol 93Increase of 55 cents per litre
Petrol 95Increase of 52 cents per litre
Diesel 0.05% (wholesale)Increase of 82 cents per litre
Diesel 0.005% (wholesale)Increase of 84 cents per litre
Illuminating Paraffin (wholesale)Increase of 67 cents per litre
LPGASDecrease of 57 cents per kg
LPGAS (Western Cape)Increase of 190 cents per litre

Local fuel prices in South Africa are predominantly influenced by international product prices, which in turn are determined by global oil prices and the rand/dollar exchange rate. During the review period, the average international product prices for petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin all increased.

However, providing some relief, the rand appreciated against the US dollar during the period under review compared to the previous period, which helped to partially offset the impact of rising international product prices.
