Louis Massyn, the Goldfields’ marathon celebrity, will be running his 40th Mielie Marathon on Saturday.
This is the oldest marathon in the Free State and celebrates its 44th year in 2023. It starts at the Welkom Technical High School, and is presented by Goudveld Multi Sport.
The 42 km marathon attracts runners from across the country.
The first Mielie Marathon was held in 1979, with 99 athletes completing it, and in 1985 an astounding 665 athletes took part in the 42 km race.
Over the years Hennie Griesel completed the second most Mielie Marathons with 21 races and a few 21 km’s in between.
Runners can pre-enter at entryninja.com under the “Events” tab. Runners who have completed ten Mielie Marathons will receive their permanent number.
