The Python NETmasters basketball is a team born from rivalry in the heart of Virginia and Welkom.

Initially this group of high school basketball players were known for their fierce rivalry on the court, but little did they know, their competitive spirit would soon unite them under one banner.

“We are a growing club. This club has a remarkable story to tell, starting from humble beginnings where the players, initially rivals from different high schools in Virginia and Welkom, united with a shared passion for the game and a strong desire to improve.

“Their story is one of determination, hard work and perseverance,” says Motlatsi Shelile, founder of the club.

He says it all started with a few chance encounters and pickup games. Players from different schools began to notice something special in one another.

“A spark of potential, a drive to improve, and a passion for the game.

“Before long, they started to gather regularly, forming a makeshift team with a shared dream,” he says.

The Python NETmasters basketball was born, with a name that symbolised their transformation from rivals to united teammates.

“We faced many challenges, learning to trust each other and blend our unique styles. With each practice, game, and triumph, our bond grew stronger, and the Pythons NETmasters’ humble beginnings soon gave way to success,” he says.

The team started to make waves in local tournaments, earning recognition and respect from other teams. The journey was not without setbacks.

“They started as a team on 16 June 2023. From this beginning until the last tournament in 2023, the team lost a lot of games and tournaments. But instead of discouragement, we used those moments to fuel our growth and determination,” he says

The team consists of players, aged from 17 to 21.

Quite remarkably, the team has no coach or manager.

“Yet, we have learned to work together, relying on each other’s strengths and supporting each other through weaknesses,” says Shelile.

As the Pythons continued to rise, they have inspired other young players in their district to work harder and believe in themselves.

Their story became a testament to the power of unity, perseverance, and a shared passion for the game.

This year the team has won two medals: one first place and the other was silver.

The silver medal was won on 27 April during a game at the Lereko Secondary School’s basketball tournament.

The first place medal was won at the Parys Basketball Academy’s tournament on 16 June.

“With each new victory and milestone, the Pythons proved that even rivals could become the closest of teammates, and as they look to the future, they know that their journey is only just beginning.”

The team members are: Motlatsi Shelile, Lerato Khuzwayo, Tsundu Shiringani, Promise Williams, Tshidiso Moshodi, Pheello Morekoa, Emihle Spikha, Jack Luthando, Itumelang Lebona, Thuto Moss, Bongani Rolinyanthi, Thulo Molete and Mzimkhulu Mabel.
