The Department of Water and Sanitation’s (DWS) weekly state of reservoirs report indicates that the Bloemfontein water supply system, with four dams supplying water to Mangaung and surrounding areas, is at 98.4%.
The Free State provincial water storage has decreased from 98.4% last week, to 97.9% this week.
Rustfontein Dam, in the Bloemfontein water supply system, now sits at 96.4%, a slight decrease from last week’s 97.0%.
The Welbedacht Dam recorded 95.1% this week, an increase from 77.8% the previous week.
It is noted that the Knellpoort Dam is at 100.0% and the Sterkfontein Dam (a reserve dam) stands at 100.7%, with Bloemhof Dam at 100.5.%.
The Allemanskraal Dam is at 97.7%, while Erfenis Dam indicates a slight decline to 98.7%, as compared to last week’s 99.2 %.
Tierpoort Dam is at 112.6%, and Kalkfontein Dam is at 99.4%. The Krugersdrift Dam’s level remains at 101.3%.
The Metsi-Matsho Dam is sitting at 85.6%, while the Fika-Patso Dam is at 81.2% and the Gariep Dam, the biggest dam in the country, has a recorded 98.2%. The Vanderkloof Dam, the second largest dam in South Africa, has recorded 99.2%.
“The DWS continues to reiterate that communities need to use water sparingly. We also encourage the public to remember that South Africa is a water scarce country. Every drop counts. Let us save water,” says Wisane Mavasa, spokesperson for the DWS.
