The four woman accused of viciously assaulting a frail 81-year-old woman at the Silver Village – Assisted Living Facility in Welkom will remain in custody until their bail hearing next week.

The State has indicated that it will oppose bail during the application on 15 July.

During their first appearance on Friday, 11 July, the four women quietly stood in the dock with hung heads and heard that they are being charged with attempted murder (a schedule 5 crime), kidnapping (a schedule 6 crime), assault GBH (a schedule 5 crime) and charges under the Old Persons Act 13 of 2006.

The accused are Lynette Brummer (64), Anna Fourie (73), Nomsa Ngcongwane (56) and Prudence Majorobella (35).

The defence argued in court that two of the accused, themselves fall under the Old Persons Act, being 64 and 73 years of age. They will, none-the-less remain in custody until their bail hearing next week.

The women were arrested on Wednesday 9 July and have remained in police custody ever since.

Vista understands that more arrests are to follow, and that further charges are pending.

This horrific story came to light when video footage of gruesome acts of cruelty and depravity on a fragile old woman who scarcely weighs 40 kg surfaced. The woman has since been hospitalised.

The elderly woman was physically subdued, restrained with duct tape. Her mouth and hands bound so that she could not move.
