Sixteen local football teams took part in the successful five-a-side Westside football tournament that was held in the Ditsheng area of Thabong, near the Setshabelo Primary School.

The tournament took place on 29 October.

The organiser of the event, Patrick Lekaota of the Motse-Thabong Community Propellers, says the aim of the tournament is to change the environment.

“We also want to change the negative mindset of our people in the environment to a positive one. The tournament is a platform to showcase amazing talent, prevent crime, lead selflessly and create business opportunities.

“This was the first tournament that had a ticket of R100 per affiliated team, bringing the total prize to R1 600. We bought the trophies and medals out of our own pockets. The first prize for the winning team was R1 000 and the second prize was R600.

“We are now heading towards the December tournament of which the affiliation will be R400 per team, and 32 teams will be taking part,” he says.

The December tournament will take place over two weeks from 16 to 24 December.

“We hope to see many people taking part and many more coming to support us. We will need funding and support to make a change in our environment as young leaders,” says Lekaota.
