The badly bruised hands of the 81-year-old victim

Gruesome acts of cruelty and depravity have come to light following video camera footage of the extreme ill treatment of a fragile 81-year-old woman in the Silver Village assisted living facility in Welkom.

Video footage and photographs depict the extreme verbal, mental, and physical abuse the elderly woman was subjected to. Weighing a mere 40kg, she was no match for the attendants at her bedside – sometimes up to four women at a time.

Lynette Brummer, manager of the facility, was extreme in her behaviour and language towards the old woman, referred to as “Hester”.

The old woman was physically subdued and restrained with duct tape. Her mouth and hands were bound so that she could not move.

The emotional scenes playing off in the videos are exacerbated by photos of extremely bruised hands, bleeding lips from the duct tape and bruises, scratches, and scrapes to the face.

Four women were arrested in Welkom on Wednesday, 9 July, and appeared in the Welkom Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 10 July.

The charges include contravention of the Old Persons Act 13 of 2006, attempted murder, Assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and kidnapping.

Sgt. Palesa Thabana, of the Lejweleputswa SAPS, has confirmed that the Police have arrested four females aged between 35 and 73.

They will appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 11 July.
