Two men were fatally wounded while attempting to rob a shop in the Welkom central business district.

On Thursday (02/06) at about 18:00 four unknown African men attacked a shop owner and then took cash and hijacked a white Nissan NP200 bakkie with registration number HTS 475 FS.

The four then proceeded to a business nearby, where they confronted the employees at gunpoint. One of the two employees fled to the back of the store, but the other man, who had a firearm, fired at the armed men. One of the suspects died at the scene and the other on arrival at the hospital.

A firearm belonging to the suspects was found in the shop, says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, SAPS media liaison officer.

Two of the suspects escaped and drove off in the hijacked bakkie.

A case of business robbery and hijacking is being investigated. Anyone with information can contact Detective WO Riaan de Lange of Welkom Serious and Violent Crimes on 060-985-9330.
