Five suspects linked to the senseless killing of a Welkom man in December 2022 have been apprehended by the Hawks.
Five suspects aged between 23 and 46 years were arrested during a tracing operation that was held in Tembisa, Gauteng, by members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit based in Welkom on 30 August.
It is alleged that on 3 December 2022, the suspects entered a network plant situated in the Welkom industrial area.
Two of the men were armed with 9 mm pistols. They tied employees up and started to load optic fibre rolls onto a vehicle.
“On their way out of the plant, the suspects fatally shot one of the employees. We later discovered that a total of seven people had been involved in the robbery,” says WO Fikiswa Matoti, of the Hawks.
The suspects took drums of fibre with an estimated value of R1,5 million and two cellphones.
The search for the remaining two suspects continues.
