Five men linked to an attempted armed robbery in Hertzogville were arrested and appeared in court on charges of possession of illegal firearms.
The arrests were made by the Hertzogville and Christina police in partnership with Hertzogville Farmers Safety following the incident that happened on 19 October at about 09:40.
“Two suspects, driving a silver Audi with Gauteng registration numbers, arrived at a bottle store and allegedly pointed a firearm at the employee. The employee managed to escape and alerted his employer who contacted the police. Members of Hertzogville SAPS responded instantly and informed Christiana SAPS members who closed the bridge,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the SAPS in Lejweleputswa.
Thakeng says the vehicle was spotted near Christiana bridge and when the driver saw the police he turned and drove back towards the direction of Hertzogville.
“A chase ensued and three suspects were arrested in possession of three firearms. The fourth suspect was stopped while driving in a separate vehicle and he was arrested. The fifth suspect who was driving a third vehicle was arrested at Vierfontein with the help of Hertzogville Farmers Safety,” says Thakeng.
The SAPS confiscated three firearms, six cellphones and three vehicles.
The suspects Thabang Kgosi (44), Lungile Khoza (42), Sophie Buzara (37), Vitals Sibanda (26) and Emmanuel Ndlovu (40) appeared in the Hertzogville Magistrate’s Court on 20 October and the case was postponed to 25 October for formal bail application.
The District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Maj. Gen. Lerato Molale, applauded the successful joint operation between Hertzogville SAPS, Christiana SAPS as well as Farmers Safety.
“We regard this as a breakthrough,” said Molale.
