On Monday (29/05), five suspects found in possession of 12.6 kg of copper cable were arrested during a joint operation that was held between Welkom police and the Matjhabeng Municipality.

On the day, the suspects were on their way to sell the copper cable at a scrap metal dealer in Welkom when they were apprehended in 13th Street, Voorspoed, Welkom.

The police confiscated a white Toyota Avanza with Free State registration numbers, and copper cable altogether weighing 12,6 kg was found and seized inside the vehicle.

The fifth suspect, a mine worker, was traced and arrested in front of one of the scrap metal dealers with copper cable weighing 4,9 kg, on his way to sell it.

The five suspects’ ages range from 39 to 56 years. They have been charged with possession of suspected copper cables.
