A fire damaged the Amogela Mall on Friday, 21 June. Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa police, says he can confirm an inquiry has been registered for investigation. “When we arrived at the scene at about 19:39, police spoke to an employee of the Matjhabeng Municipality Fire and Rescue team who informed the police that the building had caught fire and glass doors of some of the shops were destroyed. The fire was extinguished and nobody was injured,” says Thakeng. Built in 1985, this mall was the first major shopping centre in Welkom. It was initially known as the Liberty Centre.Photo: Giovan Theunissen
