Police women and other stakeholders conducted a roadblock and offered a caring hand to the needy in celebration of Women’s Month.
On 9 August women of the Welkom police station and representatives of the traffic department, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Home Affairs, immigration offices, and fire fighters embraced Women’s Month by conducting a roadblock on the R730 Welkom-Odendaalsrus road.
The police’s Women’s Network distributed 400 gender-based violence (GBV), femicide, and domestic violence pamphlets with messages to encourage women and to stand firm in supporting each other.
Women were educated about the different types of abuse and how to escape from toxic relationships.
Resulting from the roadblock one illegal immigrant was arrested, 19 traffic fines were issued that amounted to R5 900, and 114 vehicles and 119 persons searched.
On 11 August Welkom police women, together with the Women’s Network, dug into their own pockets and extended a caring hand to needy children at the Riebeeckstad Orphanage Centre and donated groceries, matrasses, and clothes.
The events were led by Col Beulah Siyaya of Welkom Visible Policing.
The anti-drugs, GBV and domestic violence awareness campaign was conducted in Bok Street, Welkom CBD. Pamphlets were distributed with the aim of alleviating crime against women and children.
These are part of the initiatives of female police officers and other stakeholders of Operation Basadi (Women are doing it for themselves) in their efforts to stamp the authority of the State.
