Two men, who claimed to be prophets, robbed a young woman of six cell phones after “prophesising” that they knew who had murdered her mother.
A 24-year-old female student was walking in the K9 section of Kutloanong on 19 October when she was approached by a man claiming to want directions.
She said she was unable to assist. A white vehicle then stopped next to them, and the driver too asked her for directions to the same place. She again responded that she could not help.
The first man told the woman that he is a prophet and that he knew who killed her mother. He told her they must go to a quiet place so that he can show her in his mirror who the killer is.
“She said that they must go to her family so that they too can hear the good news, but the “prophet” insisted that they go to a quiet place. She agreed to this,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa police.
“When she entered the car, the so-called prophet gave her a drink. He demanded her cellphone, and then ordered her to go to four of her friends and pretend to be borrowing their cellphones,” says Thakeng.
The total value of the six phones taken is R21 000. Thakeng says she was then dropped off close to her home and ordered not to look back as they had given her a stone as part of the ritual.
A case of Armed Robbery was registered, and an identikit was compiled.
