Expansion for local flea market

The Easter Welkom flea market saw overwhelming attendance and stall bookings at Rovers Club, prompting plans for expansion to accommodate its growing popularity.

The Easter Welkom flea market, which was held at its new location at Rover’s Club in Welkom, burst out of its seams – necessitating an expansion of the flea market in its current form.

The stall bookings exploded, and 95 kiosks and stands crammed into the space to ensure a vibrant market.

“The Welkom Publicity Association flea market, held on the second Saturday of every month, surprised everybody when we almost had 100 stalls booked. This was the second market to be held at Rovers Club, which is the new home for the market,” says WPA chairman, Brian Emmenis.

Emmenis says the public arrived in their masses on Saturday, 12 April. The vibe was fantastic, and as music filled the air many people could be seen dancing in the isles.

According to Emmenis, the WPA stood their ground and were determined to get the market back on track.

“We had many major pitfalls along the way. We had to move from our regular venue due to the boycotts and unrest in the city centre. This was heartbreaking, as the famous North Park was our home for many years. Dulcie Harris brokered a deal at the THS. Sadly, the venue was flooded with sewerage time and time again.

“The board set off to find a new venue, and after negotiating with Rovers Squash Court an area was secured.”

During Saturday’s market both Emmenis and Harris held an onsite meeting with Rovers Club Chairman Danie van Rensburg. He has undertaken to give the WPA even more space, which will allow a further 100 stalls.

“This is very exciting news,” Emmenis told Vista.
