Gerhard Genade, Riebeeckstad, Welkom:

Accountability is becoming more and more of a prominent enemy of South Africans post 1994.

On Thursday, 12 January, I noticed one driver and a tractor mowing the wild grass in North Park, the venue for the monthly flea market in Welkom.

I visited the January 2023 Welkom Flea Market on Saturday, 14 January. There I observed the weeds on the paved walkways had not been removed. Proper grass could not survive there, because no irrigation is taking place.

Everybody talks more and more to sidestep accountability. Who is executing tasks that are supposed to be done? More than 100 exhibitors paid for a stand at the flea market. What is done with these fees? Surely the terrain should be prepared as a marketing event for the Matjhabeng Municipality?

Any organisation will inspect a venue prior the event. Who of the WPA inspected the terrain in North Park?

I was the chairperson of the Riebeeckstad Tennis Club from 1992 to 1995. During this time I was in an ongoing battle with the Welkom Parks Department to fix the tennis nets.

The committee was only responsible for the inside of the club house. I maintained the nets on Saturday mornings with black nylon line, which I bought.

Daily the residents of Riebeeckstad experience lack of water, and or electricity. Our refuse is not collected, and there are several other services not done by the municipality.

  • If everyone can be accountable, we can all experience heaven, peace, harmony and respect on earth. Letter shortened – Editor
