Moeti Molelekoa, Thabong:

Local government should be just a hand in the body of the complete Government of National Unity (GNU).

The municipalities need to be professionalised so that it can cleanse itself of corruption and infightings. Mayors and speakers have failed to transform municipalities into accountable and transparent institutions. They need to appoint highly qualified professionals for senior administration jobs.

Mud-slinging and infightings should start and end during the campaigns towards the elections. After the election campaign, councillors should put their differences away and work together to deliver much-needed and deserved services.

The GNU should be the body of the service delivery. Provincial and local governments should be parts of the body.

Deployers should be able to forget about self-serving, but need to serve citizens who elected them into such positions.

The people have voted for them to serve them with integrity.

It is my humble view that the National Assembly should move with the necessary speed to legislate for local councils so that there must be economically efficient and effective management of resources for the optimal benefit of all South Africans.

Citizens, as consumers, will religiously pay for the services adequately rendered to them.
