Acting on a tip-off from the provincial counter narcotics unit, members of the Welkom K9 Unit arrested three suspects for possession of drugs, illegal immigration and suspected counterfeit goods.
The drugs were found on a passenger bus travelling through Welkom from Gauteng to the Western Cape on 1 March.
The SAPS found 25 boxes containing a total of 4 925 bundles of the khat drug plant in various places inside the bus.
“They also found 13 cellphones, suspected to be counterfeit, behind the driver’s seat,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa SAPS.
“Acting on information from the other passengers, the police arrested a 54-year-old man for illegal immigration. The third suspect was travelling to Bellville in the Western Cape.”
The acting district commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Brig. Mzondi Mojafi, applauded the Welkom K9 Unit.
