Dangers of drug abuse relayed to Odendaalsrus residents

An alcohol and drug abuse awareness campaign was held in Kutloanong, Odendaalsrus.


On Friday, 25 August, an alcohol and drug abuse awareness campaign was held in Kutloanong, Odendaalsrus.

This was initiated by Det. Sgt Nomthandazo Mtengwane of the Odendaalsrus Detective Services.

She is currently pursuing a bachelors degree in social work, majoring in criminology at the University of South Africa (Unisa).

She saw a need to create an awareness campaign to address alcohol and drug abuse to the Kutlwanong community, focusing more on young people in the community.

The campaign started at the Kutloanong Satellite Police Station where stakeholders such as the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca), the Department of Social Development, Department of Sport Arts and Culture, Kutloanong Rehabilitated Ex-offenders (Kreo), the Kgatelopele Taxi Association, and the Kutloanong Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP) were involved.

Mtengwane addressed youths about the dangers of using the street drug Nyaope. She told them about how it affects family relationships and their future.

“Most children steal from their parents and sell their properties. Others steal from neighbours or rob people in order to feed their habits and end up in prison,” she said.

Maria Sekeli of Sanca and Bella Marumo of the Department of Health shared the dangers of alcohol and drugs about on a person’s mental health, and how they can boost their mental health by joining sports activities.

“I would like to thank all the organisations and departments that took part in the project and for the donations made to make this venture a success.” said Mtengwane.
