On Monday, 17 June, the Bronville police and community policing forum (CPF) held an Anti-Drug, Pro-Education campaign at the Bronville Community Hall to commemorate Youth Day.
It included a community walk against substance abuse to highlight the devastating effects it holds, especially for youths and their affected families.
This campaign was done in partnership with the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca), Family and Marriage Society of South Africa (Famsa), the Bronville Learning Centre, the Genade Groep, and New Bronville. It featured a keynote address by Bianca Luiters, a social worker from Bloemfontein who was specially invited for this occasion.
With the slogan “Escaping Poverty and Addiction Through Education”, the day saw presentations done by various stakeholders to encourage the youth to resist substance abuse and strive to improve their lives through education.
The highlight of the day was the announcement of the establishment of two support groups for both substance abusers, as well as affected families.
These counselling sessions are due to start on 10 July and will be presented fortnightly at the Bronville Community Hall and the Bronville Crèche.
“As the CPF, we are happy to have helped facilitate the introduction of this critical intervention for our community,” says Dephney Tshehle, chairperson of the Bronville CPF.
“It is the first of its kind in the history of Bronville, so we are very proud of this achievement, and we are grateful to our partners who have helped us to make it possible.”
The starting times of meetings for both support groups will be communicated to the Bronville community by the first week of July.
