The Democratic Alliance (DA) motion requesting an SIU investigation into the Matjhabeng Local Municipality finances as well as provincial intervention to ensure financial recovery, was adopted by the National Council of Provinces in Parliament on Tuesday morning.
The motion highlights the fact that municipal vehicles to the value of R41 million were attached by the sheriff last week, with more to follow.
The municipality owes service providers in excess of R270 million and entered into various contracts contrary to the requirements of municipal legislation.
The Eskom debt of R5 billion and debt to the Water Board of R5,7 billion all point to the serious and likely criminal financial management of the municipality by the ANC-led local government.
The DA’s motion, adopted by all parties represented in the NCOP, calls upon Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa to proclaim an SIU investigation into the municipality’s finances as well as calling on the provincial executive to immediately intervene into the finances of the municipality. They must appoint an administrator to oversee the finance department of the municipality.
