The famous and oldest boxing club in Thabong known to be the home of champion boxing opened its doors in 1998 at the Kopanong Indoor Sports Centre for locals who are passionate about boxing.
The club contributed to Welkom being the boxing hub of South Africa during the 90s, producing world-class pugilists.
One of these was Daniel “Baby Cassius” Mapanya, undisputed former South African middleweight champion, who reigned supreme at the time.
Others include the stylish Peter “Byl” Mgojo, as well as Jacob “Pretty Boy” Moyeye.
The demise of the mines and related industries in Lejweleputswa has played a big role in the challenges faced by the different boxing clubs.
Some of the major challenges are financial support, which enables the smooth running of the entities; transport to attend domestic tournaments; financial assistance to send the selected boxers to the national championships; and boxing equipment and sports apparel.
Refusing to allow the challenges to drag them down has been their motive to survive.
The Thabong Boxing Club is in need of fresh talent and passion from the community.
It has a very rich history in Thabong and wishes to pass on the legacy to young boys and girls.
Anyone interested in joining the club can make their way to the Thabong Indoor Sports Centre, as training takes place on Monday to Friday from 15:30 to 18:00.
