The Matjhabeng Local Municipality is buckling under the pressure of collapsed sewer lines as a result of rubble being thrown into the manholes.

The blocked manholes contribute immensely to the already strained sewer system. The negative impact is felt and seen in all wards of the municipality.

Bloem Water has appointed a service provider under the intervention of the Department Ministry of Water and Sanitation to unblock manholes in the area locality where a challenge was identified.

“Residents are urged to please refrain from throwing foreign objects into the manholes to assist in the mammoth task of returning our infrastructure to a functional and efficient state,” says the executive Mayor of Matjhabeng, Thanduloxo Khalipha.

Recently, a massive unblocking initiative was undertaken under the facilitation of Khalipha.

Foreign objects were found inside the manholes, including rocks and plastic bottles. Not only did these objects present a challenge for the appointed service providers by Bloem Water seeking to unblock the manholes, it also indicated that the protection of municipal infrastructure is a collective effort.

“Our infrastructure is fragile and needs to be protected and cared for. Please refrain from throwing rubble into our manholes as this negatively impacts the sewer line in its entirety,” says Khalipha.

He asks residents to practice responsible citizenry. Residents are urged to report anyone seen throwing rubble into the manholes.”We all need to stand together and work towards a cleaner and safer environment.”
