The Restore Riebeeckstad project has received an economic injection of R9 000 to uplift and improve conditions in this suburb.

The project involves a comprehensive cleaning-up campaign of the whole suburb, and is aimed at providing a better and cleaner environment for its residents.

It was initiated by Goldfields WiFi and Computers, and the generous donation was provided by Evotel.

“Understanding that the local municipality is struggling, we saw the need to take action and restore these areas to full function. The project was meant to only be done during December 2022, but on careful evaluation and understanding of the scope of work, the initiative is now an ongoing project until further notice,” says Juan de Mellion of Restore Riebeeckstad.

He says this is a home-grown, home-town project where not only the suburb is cleaned, but all the overgrown open spaces are also cleaned, providing job opportunities to the local community in the process.

The project includes the cleaning up of areas and overgrown fields that have become a danger to the safety of residents.

Particular areas of concern are the water towers and substations that are being vandalised, and which are in disrepair.

The project also includes the cleaning of streets, picking up of litter, removal of rubbish bags, and ensuring that streets, sidewalks and public areas are kept clean and well-maintained.

Vehicles and equipment were specifically purchased and rented to help with the clearing of the fields while locals were hired to assist with the labour.

“Our desire was to bring restoration and work for locals from outside of the town, in an effort to benefit the entire town,” says Riaan Nell, owner of Goldfields WiFi and Computers.

He says they are building pride within their own space and getting the community involved wherever they can.

Bradley Bekker, Evotel general manager, says his company’s involvement in this project is in line with Evotel’s commitment to improving the lives of people living in the communities it operates in.

The project was started in Riebeeckstad, where there was a need for the clean up and restoration.

“It was a huge success, and there are now plans to expand the project into other areas of Welkom, and also the rest of Matjhabeng.”
