Having the best interest of the youth at their core is what the Phakama Youth Transformation movement is all about; striving for the empowerment and betterment of youths in Matjhabeng.

The organisation was an initiative that was started in 2022 when Linda Ngqotwana saw how the youth fell into drugs and unfulfilling activities because of unemployment and the lack of sports and creative activities.

Phakama wants to develop the Hunters sports ground in Kutloanong’s K6 extension, the heritage sports ground for the community, into a netball court and soccer field with changing rooms for the teams.

They have a chess academy called Chess Fridays, which is when matches and tournaments take place. On 3 November a tournament was held and Rethabile Malite, who was one of the best players in the mayoral cup, won a gold medal.

  • Phakama has asked for assistance from the Harmony Gold Mine with the sports ground and the hiring of locals, but they were told that the municipality has allocated a certain amount for the developments of the community.

The movement had a cleaning campaign at a site in the Kutloanong K1 extension, ward 21, with the plan to establish car washes and salons.

“We would appreciate assistance from the community of Matjhabeng. We cannot wait on the municipality because they are only doing campaign jobs.

Phakama Youth Transformation is a registered youth initiative,“Everyone is welcome to take a stand with us and all who believe in volunteerism can volunteer” said Ngqotwana, chairperson of the Phakama Youth Transformation organisation.
