To celebrate a century of life and love is no small accomplishment, but one which a well-known Welkom resident can boast about.

Maria Gertruida Elizabeth Dukas was born on 29 July 1925 in Wepener. Her journey took a significant turn when she married her beloved Peter William Dukas on 17 April 1946 in Ventersburg.

Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Hennenman. There were not many shops, but Maria, ever resourceful, opened a small grocery store, Dukas Café, supplying essential goods to the residents of Welkom and nearby mines.

As the town grew, the family was offered a chance to purchase prime property in Welkom, but chose to remain in Hennenman. Maria and Peter had four children: Douglas, Basil, Maureen and Butch.

A family member reminisces that their lives were shaped by the challenges of the Great Depression (1929-1939) and the Second World War (1939-1945). One of the cherished memories from their time in Hennenman was witnessing snow for the first time in 1947. This special moment was one of many that showcased the beauty and wonder of life in their beloved town.

The couple’s legacy in Hennenman flourished, with their shop becoming a well-known landmark in the community.

Maria has 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild, proving that her knack for building a family is as strong as her pioneering spirit.

In 1987, the family faced a profound loss when Peter passed away.

Now in 2025, her family gathered together to honour her remarkable life that has been filled with love, resilience and an unwavering spirit. She is a true testament to the enduring power of family and community.

“Here is to a century of beautiful memories, and many more to come.”
