Thuthuzela Care Centre at Bongani Hospital, Welkom, is a vital organisation that offers critical support to survivors of rape and gender-based violence (GBV) in the Lejweleputswa district.
On average, they assist between 50 to 80 individuals each month. “This represent only a fraction of the true prevalence of GBV in the community,” says Abi Schoeman, DA councillor, who visited the centre on Women’s Day.
“The scourge of violence within our community affects individuals of all ages and genders, highlighting the urgent need for such services,” says her colleague, councillor René Steyn. The centre faces significant challenges like transportation and qualified nursing staff.
Schoeman says they will submit a report to the Provincial Legislature to ensure that the Departments of Health and Social Development support organisations working to improve the lives of residents.
