The implementation of a comprehensive closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera project estimated to cost in the hundreds of thousands of rands was top of the agenda at a recent high-level meeting between the police, the Community Policing Forum (CPF), and prominent Welkom businessmen and residents. The meeting was held in the boardroom of the Goldfields Casino on Monday, 24 February. “The aim of this initiative is to enhance security and strengthen crime prevention measures in the Welkom CBD,” said Capt. Andries Coetzee.
Under this initiative, the CBD will be divided into six blocks, with surveillance cameras strategically installed in each area to maximize coverage.
To ensure the smooth roll-out of this project, Coetzee and Sgt. Nini Radebe will personally engage with businesses in each block, focusing on facilitating the installation process and ensuring the system operates effectively to enhance safety in the business district. Dirk Kotze, chairman of the CPF, emphasised the crucial role that the cooperation of businesses will play in the success of the project, and the successful implementation of the CCTV network. He urged the businesses in the CBD to become involved and to support the initiative. “Dedicated WhatsApp groups will be created for better communication and coordination between the roleplayers and members,” he told them.
“CPF Sector 3 remains committed to fostering a safer and more cooperative business environment in Welkom, working hand-in-hand with the community to enhance security measures.” For more information, phone Coetzee on 072-397-5212.
