On Monday night a calf fell into a manhole in Brebner Street Welkom. A distraught cow herd contacted the Welkom SPCA to help him, and that they did. Amanda Randall and Jt Van Wijk, local SPCA inspectors contacted Maureen Nel, SPCA chairlady, who contacted Robert Buchler of Concord Crane Hire and the three-and-a-half hour long rescue operation commenced. “They were struggling for hours to get it out. We thought it had fractures – but nothing – they retrieved the calf unharmed. It was such a relief. Welkom people are absolutely amazing,” says Nel.
