A 19-year-old woman died after sustaining 90 per cent burn wounds to her body.

She died shortly after telling nurses at the Bongani Regional Hospital, Welkom, that her boyfriend had doused her with petrol and set her alight.

The young woman was admitted to hospital on 20 October with severe burns all over her body. “She told the nursing staff that the suspect was her boyfriend, who resides in Thabong. She told them that he had doused her with petrol and set her alight,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa police.

Thakeng says that Const. DR Tlhomeli and Sgt Gauta Mavundla of the Thabong Task Team arrested the 37- year-old boyfriend on 23 October at about 22:40.

“He was admitted to hospital as he too had sustained burn wounds. He is under police guard. The motive of this gruesome murder is unknown and the investigation is continuing,” says Thakeng.

The deceased has been identified as Mangaka Manjani (19).

  • In an unrelated incident, an argument between two brothers about cleaning a house ended in murder.
