A Welkom-Gimnasium High School learner, Nyakallo Mbongo (16), was chosen to attend the 43rd annual Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition (BYSCC) hosted in China from 28 to 31 March.

The Welkom born and bred Nyakallo has always had an interest in Maths and Science since her primary school days at the Riebeeckstad Primary School.

Nyakallo is the first learner in Welkom to be invited to Beijing to showcase her project.

The project was inspired by the catastrophic floods in KwaZulu-Natal in 2022, and aims to restore degraded soil by testing various biochar inoculation.

“If the project goes on the market it can create jobs, especially for skilled workers, and increase food security,” explains Nyakallo.
