All projects from the Welkom region participating in the Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF) gained a medal.
The ISF is the culmination of district and regional Eskom Science Expo’s with 295 national and international projects competing in 13 categories.
Many prizes were won.
The special awards were attained by Fatima Noor of Welkom-Gimnasium, who received a laptop for an outstanding project in Bioinformatics from the National Institute of Theoretical and Computational Sciences (NIThECS).
Leila Erasmus of the Welkom-Volkskool received a tablet from the Wits-Edinburgh Sustainable African Futures Awards, and Tshoanello Setai of the Eldoret Secondary School received a laptop from Siemens Energy for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (Stem) school development.
Gold medals in Engineering went to Fatima for “Next-gen bandages: precision enhanced wound care”, and in Social Sciences to Leila for “Learning ability and music.” Leila was also the Social Sciences category’s winner for the juniors (Gr. 6 to Gr. 9).
Silver medals were awarded to Helene Fourie of the Trio High School in Plant Sciences for “Low G food”; to Calista Gerber of Welkom-Gimnasium in Energy for “Remotely controlling and monitoring the regeneration of electricity via an App”; and to Alexis Hefer of the St Andrew’s School in Social Sciences for “Performance anxiety among high school hockey players.”
Bronze medals were awarded to Nkosi Kutyunga and Tshoanello Setai of the Welkom Technical High School (THS) in Engineering with “Hydrobot 3.0 S.I.G.” and Tshoanello Setai (Eldoret) with “InsuBest”. Micaela Sardinha (St Andrew’s) also received a bronze in Social Sciences for “Therapy in schools.”
