Following the successful Siyadlala Driving Taxi Games that were held at the Welkom Showgrounds on 2 June, a bigger and better event is being planned for September.

Masande Mateisi, one of the organisers of the event, says it exceeded their expectations and good bonds were forged in the local taxi industry.

Some 30 drivers from Majakathata and the Putswastene taxi associations in Welkom took part.

The winner of the day was Siphelele JoJo, who bagged R500 for the best driver. The winning team was Majakathata.

The next games will be held on 29 September at the showgrounds.

“This time we are expecting 60 drivers from Bloemfontein and the Eastern Cape to compete. Especially the Eastern Cape has shown a lot of interest in competing. There will be four teams comprising 15 drivers each,” says Mateisi.

The fist prize will be R10 000, the second prize R3 000 and the best driver will pocket R1 000.

“The aim of the games is to bring about a shift in the taxi industry. We want to build a good image, and having a best driver component will change the mindset of both the drivers and the public towards the taxi industry,” says Mateisi.

Again, only drivers will be competing and the taxis will be provided.
