Jonas Selapane Soke emerged as the winner of this year’s Mielie Marathon that started from THS Welkom on Saturday (21/01). His personal best (PB) marathon time of 2:26:08 secured him a win. “We are so proud that this year’s winner comes from Welkom and, more interestingly, from the Welkom Runners (WR) group,” says Nkhetheni Masupa of WR

Louis Massyn and Hennie Griesel are two of the running legends who took part in Saturday’s Mielie Marathon in Welkom.

A total of 925 runners took part in the 44th Mielie Marathon, the biggest one that Goudveld Multi Sport has hosted up to date.

On Saturday (21/01) runners from all over South Africa converged on Welkom to take part in the oldest marathon in the Free State. This was also the Free State Championship in the 42 km. The event comprises four distances: 5 km, 10 km, 21,1 km and 42,2 km.

The men’s winner was Jonas Soke from the CUT Athletics Club and the ladies winner was Yolande Maclean from Murray and Roberts.

“What a privilege to have had her here with us, as she finished 9th in the Comrades Marathon last year,” says Louis Fourie of Goldfields Multisport, the convener and organiser of this annual event.

“Our Own Louis Massyn of Goudveld Multi Sport, finished his 40th Mielie Marathon. Louis was a founder member of the first Mielie Marathon back in 1979. He, together with Hennie Griesel form an integral part of the marathon’s history. Hennie participated in 21 Mielie Marathons and numerous 21- and 10 km races,” says Fourie.
