An angry mob attacked, assaulted and set alight a foreign national after he attempted to rape a young girl in Thabong.

On 22 January an unknown man climbed over the wall of a house in Thabong where a 17-year-old was alone at home and he allegedly tried to rape her.

Nearby residents saw what was happening and they attacked and assaulted the man and they set him alight.

The Thabong police immediately responded to the scene and found the naked man with injuries to his face and head. He had sustained burn wounds to his genital area and his midriff.

“The SAPS at the scene asked for his name, and he told them that he was a foreign national. He was certified dead on arrival at Bongani hospital,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa police.

Thakeng says a case of murder is being investigated.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Free State, Lt Gen. Baile Motswenyane warns residents of Thabong not to take the law into their own hands.

“They must call the police so that a thorough investigation can be conducted. In this instance a murder case has been registered and now we are looking for the residents who killed the suspect,” he says.
